The tabletop version of the JUNCO is the result of a chance encounter with the object during a family visit, where a unit dating between 1965-70 was discovered. It is yet another testament to the adaptability of this design, re-edited by Coderch, F. Correa, and A. Milá, based on a concept from artisans in the Valencia region.
In the early 1960s, the master architect J.A. Coderch de Sentmenat began to recommend to his clients the JUNCO wall lamp, made by Valencian artisans and whose production was overseen by Coderch's sister, Mercedes. The lamp was only made in one size, but in the mid-1980s, different sizes were found in the attic of the family home. This fact suggests that the architect had a very personal relationship with this lamp and that he tried to play with its dimensions for different projects.
Originally available in wall lamp version and single sized, various dimensions of the JUNCO emerged in the family's storage area by the mid- 1980s. This discovery suggests a deeply personal connection between the architect and the lamp, as he seemingly experimented with its dimensions for different projects.
TUNDS recovers for the design culture this emblematic lamp that has remained very discreet in recent years, both for its purely artisanal essence and for the fate of the times that has cornered artisan values.
The uniqueness of its manufacture lies in using rattan in a position contrary to its natural flexion, leaving visible, on the outer part of the wall lamp, the flat part of the natural fiber. In the superposition of the two concentric spirals, it is possible to disguise the bulb, in addition to creating a play of light and shadows in the gaps of the cylinder, masterfully matching, which greatly resembles those used by Coderch in his DISA and CISTER designs.
The timeless design of the JUNCO wall lamp is a return to artisanal mastery, to the roots, and to what is genuinely authentic. It is a gift from the history of design that has always been there for those who are able to pause for a moment and appreciate the time and space that skilled artisan hands dedicate to achieving excellence.
